December 5, 2011One of the most renowned websites that provides immense help to people in gaining knowledge and finding information is wikipedia. It is a website that came into being by sharing pieces of information by different people around the world on one and the same platform. Sometimes, the information might not be complete because people lack the ability to find authentic information about a subject or sometimes they are not even sure that what they are providing is true or not. Yet, people around the world keep Wikipedia as their major source of gaining information without sometimes knowing the sources. Although, Wikipedia came into being a few years back, much before Google but still people refer it to be the one of the main sources of finding answers to their major questions. The information displayed on the website is mostly provided by professors of the universities and the major people of a relevant subject which are known to be the authentic sources of their work. Whereas Google gives a number of links related to your query, Wikipedia gives all the related information on one page at a time. This information includes history or background of the subject, its application, its advantages and disadvantages and the conclusion. The references which are related to the subject discussed on Wikipedia are also mentioned so that if an online user wants to search on the subject, he or she can search on those references easily.
There are many online websites that help people, especially students around the world in their work. That work can be related to their school or university work or any project related information even for offices. The help that these people take from these websites is not to be used as it is. It is called plagiarism, especially if you are doing a school or university project. That way, teachers don’t rely on the work that you have done because it won’t be your own struggle that you have put in. It would simply be a “copy, paste” stuff. This is prohibited in many schools and colleges as this encourages students to note down the work straight away from the websites rather than putting their own effort in it.
Wikipedia is not known to be authentic by experts around the world because sometimes the information provided on an article is biased. A professor or a professional might have given such concepts which might not be authentic on the whole but are correct in his or her own view. So, that kind of information is not authentic at all. That is the reason, when students are required to do their projects or assignments they are asked to provide information after full research and analysis so that they have a complete concept about the subject they are writing and give their full effort with it. What students learn in this way is more productive rather than just copying from a website.
